In B&W1 (not CI), get him to eat from a field.  That usually does the trick. 

Failing that, he should puke plenty if you get him to eat anything that isn't food, e.g. rocks, toys, etc.
 
I thought that they could get ill from the poisoned grain on Land 2? ???
 
I had a creature once that I'd always feed poisoned mushrooms to see if it did anything. (I also generally treated him like crap just to see how he'd turn up (he ended up never doing anything, ever))

Probably ruined his growth or something, but I never knew for sure.  You can try it, but :(

He'll throw up if he eats anything non-food (like stated above) but I don't know if it has any lasting effects.
 
As FP said  creatures  eating  from a field of  unripe grain will get the creature  to puke.

Hang on, what exactly do you mean by making him sick then ??? ?

The only symptom of a creature being sick is them puking.
 
It's not really in the game  but it is a stat that LH forgot to remove from the  Creature  Cave.
