I am glad you figured this out years in advance. Decided to revist this game about 1.5 weeks ago after not playing since 2004. I had the same issue wiith my cow. Luckily I want to play with the Sheep, so I did what you suggested and swapped to the sheep after reinforcing night sleeping. Worked...
