I dunno... i've got a brown bear and he can go for over 7 fights in a row without dying. but that's cuz he's got max offense. ^.^

go for teh wolf... he's the fastest, which makes him a really good gatherer. you can also hit the enemy hard(if you've got soldier training) and make a quick getaway. just make sure you don't feed him too much or he'll slow down a bit.

first of all, you worry too much about your creature snacking on your peepl. just teach him to munch on your enemie's peepl(which includes soldiers) and keep him on the soldier leash AT ALL TIMES! keep him away from your towns, evil creatures break EVERYTHING. don't worry about where he poos...
